A shophouse, a roaster, and a routine.
Beach Street, George Town · since 2010
We took over a 1920s shophouse on Beach Street that had been a tailor, a printers', and briefly an aquarium. The walls still have the tile-work from the tailor — green jade, hand-laid — and we kept them on purpose. It is the first thing people photograph when they walk in.
Feeka means tea-time in old Swedish, but we serve coffee. The name was a gift from a friend who passed through Penang in our first year and never quite left. He helped us pick the espresso machine and roast our first batch on a little Probat in the back room. He still comes by on Tuesdays.
We are open six days a week. We close on Wednesdays so the staff can sleep in, the espresso machine can rest, and one of us can finally do the grocery run. If the kuih is gone by lunch, it is because it was good that morning and we underestimated. If the V60 changed, it is because we drank something on Sunday that made us reconsider everything.
Bring a book. Bring a friend. The wifi is fast but the room is better.
